Subject:

INJURED WORKERS ON SITE - NEWS MEDIA INTEREST On September 17, at 2:52 p.m.,

the licensee declared a Notification of Unusual Event (NOUE) based on the transport of two injured and j

potentially contaminated individuals to a local hospital.

The two individuals were in the process of removing a tube bundle from a main steam Moisture Separator Reheater (MSR) with the aid of a number of chain falls.

One of the individuals had his protective clothing cut off and he was j

transported to the hospital.

The other individual was suspected of having a back injury and therefore not all of his protective clothing was removed prior to transport.

Both individuals were considered contaminated and were escorted in the ambulances by Health Physics technicians.

The local hospital was alerted to prepare a room to treat these individuals.

Following treatment, the clothing, ambulance, treatment room and other materials used to treat the individuals were monitored for contamination.

The protective clothing and one set of scrubs were found to have fixed contamination.

All the other material was determined not to be contaminated.

The clothing was returned to the site and the NOUE was terminated at 4:45 p.m.

The two individuals were found not to have sustained serious injury but were to be kept overnight in the hospital for observation.

It was expected that_they would be released the next day without any work restrictions.

'A' Savannah, GA news organization initially reported that the two individuals had been overexposed.

Licensee management indicated that tne news organization was to come to the site for interviews.

Site management informed the Senior Resident Inspsctor that the news media

-would be referred to corporate pubic relations.

The resident inspectors as well as regional Health Physics inspectors were on site and monitored the transport of the injured individuals and site surveys.

-The State of Georgia has been notified.
