Dear Chairman Palladino:

A number of municipalities, organizations and individuals have contacted me to express their grave concern over a proposal to bury low-level nuclear waste near the Davis-Bess.e Nuclear Reactor in Northwest Ohio.

The land in the vicinity of the Davis-Besse plant is marsh.

Understandably, many people fear contamination of the water table, as well as potential damage to acquatic life in near-by wetland preserves and Lake Erie.

I would appreciate learning of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission's actions in this regard to preserve public health and safety and to assuage public alarm.

With the recent passage of the Midwest Interstate Low-Level Radloactive Waste Compact, there is opportunity to dispose of any nuclear waste in a site and in a manner consistent with public health and safety.

Al-though public hearings on nuclear waste disposal are not legally necessary, such hearings would be warranted to address the grave concerns of the public over the proposed waste deposit site.

Thank you fcr your attention to this important matter.

'ncerely, I
