January 10, 1978 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL DCCURRENCE--PNO-78-04 l

This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or-public interest significance. The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

Facility: Boston Edison Company Pilgrim Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1 Plymouth, Massachusetts (DN 50-292)

PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FAILING l ENVIRONMENTAL TEST An installed electrical connector had previously been removed from service and sent to the vendor, Bendix Corporation, Sydney, New York, as a sample for environmental qualification testing. The connector failed the test due. to separation of field applied potting material from the electrical cable insulation. The potting material forms the seal between the cables and the connector. This failure would allow moisture to enter the connector under post loss of coolant accident w~

environmental conditions of high temperature, pressure and humidity. '

NRC, Region I (Philadelphia) received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the licensee at 5:15 p.m. , January 9,1978.
