This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of an event of POSSIBLE safety or-public interest significance.
The information presented is as initially received without verification or evaluation and is basically all that is known by IE staff on this date.

PLANT SHUTDOWN DUE TO AN ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR FAILING l
ENVIRONMENTAL TEST An installed electrical connector had previously been removed from service and sent to the vendor, Bendix Corporation, Sydney, New York, as a sample for environmental qualification testing.
The connector failed the test due. to separation of field applied potting material from the electrical cable insulation.
The potting material forms the seal between the cables and the connector. This failure would allow w
moisture to enter the connector under post loss of coolant accident
~
environmental conditions of high temperature, pressure and humidity.

The licensee commenced a reactor shutdown at 9:00 p.m., January 9,

g The licensee had planned to replace connectors of the type tested during

a maintenance outage scheduled for January 20, 1978.
Media interest is expected due to the shutdown and attendant reduction h
of electrical generating capacity in New England during the winter. The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been informed.

a press release on January 9, 1978.
