I I INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4), 3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specifications (ETS). These programs have been carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation include benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and I electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The ultimate purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the THINS.

I Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in June 1986 (Table 1). The follow-I ing changes in the THINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule vere made during June:

creel surveys originally scheduled for 18 June were conducted on 17 June, and ichthyoplankton sampling scheduled for 17 June was conducted 18 June, due to field personnel scheduling problems; electrofishing, originally scheduled for 19 June was postponed due to rain and subsequently con-ducted on 26 June. Details are provided in the following pages wherein progress is described for each program.

I Data presented in this report are considered provisional, pending subse-quent proofing, analysis, and presentation in the annual report.

Vater Quality Analysis Objective: To measure select physical and chemical parameters I of the Susquehanna River in the vicinity of Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS) concurrent with General Ecological Sur-vey samples.

1

I E Progress: Vater quality samples were collected on 11 June 1986 and forwarded to TMI-EC (Table 1). Select water quality parame-I ters were also measured at sampling times and locations of the General Ecological Survey.

Benthic Macroinvertebrates I objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three stations in the vicinity I of THINS.

Progress: Benthos sampling on 11 June 1986 consisted of repli-cate (4) samples taken at each of the three benthos stations (Table 1).

Ichthyoplankton Objective: To determine species composition, relative abun-dance, density, and seasonal and spatial distribution of ich-thyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of THINS.

I Progress: Replicate (2) ichthyoplankton samples were taken at each of the eight sampling stations on 3, 10, 18, and 24 June 1986 (Table 1).

Seine Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, seasonal and spatial distribution, condition factor, occurrence of parasites, anomalies and fish kills, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicin-ity of THINS.

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the six samp- ,

ling stations on 4 and 25 June 1986 (Table 1).

E 2

i I

E Electrofishing I Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of patasites, anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

I Progress: Electrofishing at the six stations was completed on 5 and 26 June 1986 (Table 1). Samples consisted of 40 fish of 11 species and 104 fish of 14 species collected on 5 and 26 June, respectively (Tables 2 and 3). More fish were collected at Sta-tion 11B1 (16 specimens) than at any other station on 5 June; most fish were collected at Station 10A3 (36 specimens) on 26 June. Stations 11B1 and 10A3 also produced the largest number of species (9 species each) on 5 June and 26 June, respectively.

Generally, centrarchids were most abundant with pumpkinseed (11 specimens) dominating the catch on 5 June. Quillback (32 spe-cimens) dominated the catch on 26 June. Ectoparasites observed on fishes collected on 5 June included: anchor vorms (Lernaea) on one pumpkinseed, one bluegill, and two smallmouth bass; and leeches on one smallmouth bass. Cysts were seen on one bluegill specimen. Included among fishes collected on 26 June were one smallmouth bass and one channel catfish exhibiting wounds re-lated to angling ((e.g., hooks in mouth, mouth fungus, eye injuries, etc.). Anchor vorms were observed on two pumpkin-I seeds, and leeches were seen on two redbreast sunfish and one small. mouth bass collected on 26 June.

~ '

I Creel Survey I Objective: To investigate the extent of success of sport-fishing, and determine angler residence and use of catch, in the I Susquehanna River near THINS.

~

I 3

I

I Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 2, 17, 22 and 28 June 1986 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 394 anglers who report-I edly fished 779.90 hours0.00104 days
0.025 hours
1.488095e-4 weeks
3.4245e-5 months
, caught 851 fish, and harvested 267 fish (31% of the total atch)(Tables 4 through 7). The average catch per effort (c/e) and harvest per effort (h/e) were 1.09 and 0.34 fish per hour, respectively. Smallmouth bass and un-identified sunfishes (Lepomis spp.) vere the predominant fishes caught (323 and 149 specimens, ecpectively) by anglers. Small-mouth bass (89 specimens) and channel catfish (56 specimens)

I were the predominant species harvested by anglers. Most anglers (205), most fish caught (374), and most hours fished (390.90) were recorded at the General Reservoir. Most fish harvested from the York Haven Generating Station (102), while the highest c/e (2.58) was recorded at the West Dam. Anglers were predomin-antly residents of York or Dauphin Counties and the majority indicated that thay eat at least a portion of their catch.
