REGISTRY OF RADIOACTIVE SEALED SOURCES AND DEVICES FAFETY-EVALUATION OF DEVICE NQ2: NR-8088-D-801-S. DAIG 1 October 15, 1997' PAGE 2 OF 3 DEVICE TYPEt- Electron Tubes DESCRIPTION:

The Flight Termination Ordnance System (FTOS) Firing Unit for the Missile X (MX) Weapon System contains a single overvoltage spark gap (Electron Tube, Type 323812) containing 40 pCi (1.48 MBq) of Nickel-G3. Once the. internal components of the unit are assembled, the unit is filled with a rigid polyurethane foam and

. enclosed by an .luminum cover. This cover serves as the outer case for the completed assembly. A silicone rubber thermal insulating shield / cover is then bonded over tL entire outer .

surface of the unit.

The Ordnance Initiation System (OIS) Firing Unit for the MX Weapon System contains two overvoltage spark gaps (Electron Tubes, Type 343814), each containing 85 pCi (3.15 MBq) of Carbon-14 and other components. Following assembly, a rigid _

polyurethane foam protection is inserted into the interior of the unit and a corrosion resistant steel cover is' installed.

LABELING:

Each unit received at Thiokol is pre-labeled with a radiation label. No additional labeling is required.

DIAGRAM:

See attachments 1 and 2.

EXTERNAL RADIATION LEVELS:

Thiokol reports, when fully assembled, both units are environmentally sealed and no external radiation is detectable.

OUALITY ASSURANCE AND CONTROL:

No unit will be allowcd into Thiokol until it has been inspected, logged and surveyed. Any device exhibiting readings in excess of 0.10 mR/hr (1.0 uSv/hr) shall be brought to the attention of the supervisor and radiation protection officer. Firing units

' determined to be damaged or unusable will be returned to the supplier.

L Tests will be conducted to ensure the firing units meet performance and interface requirements.

A leak test is performed on each item.

  • REVIEWER NOTE: No certificate is required because these devices are used solely under the Unittd St&tas Air Force's Master Materials License.
  • These devices are not subject to periodic leak tests.
  • Handling, storage, use, transfer, and disposal: To be determined by the licensing authority.
  • This registration sheet and the information contained within the reference shall not be changed without the written consent of the NRC.

EbEETY ANALYSIS SUMM7dX1 This registry certificate has been converted to inactive status since Thiokol is not the end user and therefore is not the custom user of these devices. Furthermore, no certificate is required because these devices are used solely under the United States Air Force's Master Materiale License.

REFERENCES:

The following supporting documents for the E.G.& G. Models 343812 and 343814 electron tubes are hereby incorporated by reference and are made a part of this registry document.

  • Thiokol's letters date February 25, 1997, October 22, 1982, and March 5, 1981, with enclosures thereto.
