INTRODUCTION The objective of this monthly report is to document compliance with the nonradiological (aquatic) environmental monitoring programs specified in Sections 3.1.la(4),

3.1.2a., and 4.6.1 of the Environmental Technical Specification (ETS). These programs are being carried out as directed in the Environmental Controls Aquatic Sampling Manual. Program elements being conducted under contract to GPU Nuclear Corporation are benthic macroinvertebrates, ichthyoplankton, fish population dynamics (seine and electrofishing), creel surveys, and water quality. The purpose of these studies is to obtain a database sufficient to establish the natural fluctuations within the ecosystem, and identify any significant biological alterations resulting from the operation of the Three Mile Island Nuclear Station (TMINS).

Compliance with all programs specified in the ETS and detailed in the Aquatic Sampling Manual was achieved in July 1988 (Table 1). Inclement weather resulted in changes to the TMINS Aquatic Sampling Schedule for July.

Electrofishing sampling was rescheduled from 20 to 21 July due to thunderstorms. The ichthyoplankton program had to be rescheduled twice from 5 to 6 and 26 to 27 July to accommodate weather and schedule changes.

, the annual report. '

" e Benthic Macroinvertebrates !

Objective: To assess the abundance, distribution, and diversity of benthic macroinvertebrates at three i stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

, Progress: Replicate (4) macroinvertebrate' samples were

! collected at each of the three stations on 7 July 1988 (Table 1). Sorting of the 7 July samples has been completed; identification of the 5 May samples was completed. Analysis of the 8 June samples was initiated.

, Ichthyoplankton 4

Objective: To determine species composition, relative abundance, density, and seasonal and spatial 9

distribution of ichthyoplankton at eight stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

i Progress: Replicate (2) ichthyoplankton samples were l taken at each of the eight stations on 6, 11, 18, and 27 4

1 July 1988 (Table 1). All samples collected through 27 1

5 July have been sorted; identifications have been 1 2

completed through-ll May. Analysis of the 18 May samples was initiated. .

l Seine l l

Objective: To assess. species composition; relative [

abundance; seasonal and spatial distribution; con 6ition factor; occurrence of parasites, anomalies, and fish l kills; and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to seine capture at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS. ;

Progress: Seine collections were taken at each of the ,

six stations on 11 July 1988 (Table 1). Processing was ;

completed through 31 May; work was initiated on 6 June samples.

(

Results of the May 1988 samples are presented in Tables 2 and 3. A total of 289 and 2271 fish of 11 and !

21 species was collected on 3 and 31 May, respectively.

On 3 May most fish were taken at Station 10B5, but most !

species occurred at Station 10A2. On 31 May most fish ,

and most species were collected at Station 13B5.

Spotfin shiner and spottail shiner dominated the catch ;

on 3 May. On 31 May the catch was dominated by the young of many of the early spawning species. Among those in abundance were white sucker and tesse11ated darter. The spotfin shiner and mimic shiner were also abundant.

3

Parasites and anomalies were observed on 168 fish of 11 species in May. Black spot, pugheadedness, and fin damage were most prevalent occurring chiefly on the spotfin shiner.

Electrofishing Objective: To assess species composition, relative abundance, occurrence of parasites and anomalies, and species diversity of fishes vulnerable to electrofisher captured at six stations in the vicinity of TMINS.

Progress: Electrofishing at six stations was completed on 21-22 July 1988 (Table 1). A total of 274 fish of 20 species was collected in July (Table 4). Most fish (91 specimens) were collected at Station 10A3; most species were taken at Stations 13Al and 10A3. The catch was dominated by the pumpkinseed, redbreast sunfish, bluegill, and smallmouth bass. Rock bass and green sunfish were also common. Ectoparasites and anomalies were observed on 23 fish of 7 species; anchor worms (Lernaea) were most prevalent. Bluegill and pumpkinseed were most commonly affected.

i l,

Creel survey ;

i Objective: To investigate the extent and success of

. r sportfishing, and determine angler residence and use of r catch, in the Susquehanna River riear THINS.

l Progress: Creel surveys were conducted on 10, 13, 19, -

and 30 July 1988 (Table 1). Interviews consisted of 249 I anglers who fished 516.70 hours8.101852e-4 days
0.0194 hours
1.157407e-4 weeks
2.6635e-5 months
, caught 933 fish, and t harvested 169 fish (18.1% of the total catch) (Tables 5 !

through 8). The average catch per

 • fort and harvest

(

per effort were 1.80 and 0.33 fish per hour, !

t respectively. Smallmouth bass, channel catfish, and i i

sunfishes (Lepomis spp.) were the predominant fishes caught (594,109, and 78 specimens, respectively). l Fishing pressure was greatest in the General Reservoir [

with 129 anglers fishing a total of 283.20 hours2.314815e-4 days
0.00556 hours
3.306878e-5 weeks
7.61e-6 months
. Most ,

fish were caught (528) and harvested (106) from the :

General Reservoir and York Haven Generating Station !

areas, respectively. The highest catch per effort f

(3.28) and harvest per effort (1.15) occurred at the [

East Dam area. Anglers were predominantly residents of l York or Dauphin counties, and the majority indicated i

that they eat or would eat a portion of their catch.

Water Quality Analysis O[3jective: To m'easure select physical and chemical paranieters of the Susqu. hanna River in the vicinity of Tl'. INS concurrent with General Ecological Survey samples.

Progress: Water quality samples were collected on 7 July 1988 iTable 1) and forwarded tu 54I-EC for analysis of TDS. Selected water quality parameters were also measured at the sampling times and locations described in the Aquatic Sampling Manual.
