SUBJECT:

PROPOSED LLW DISPOSAL FACILITY, SOUTH DAKOTA

SUMMARY

Mr. Stern wished to discuss the subject proposed facility and any activities by Chem-Nuclear Systems, Inc. (CNSI) on developing the facility.

He had several questions outlined below which I answered. Also outlined are , .

additional topics discussed briefly, and a list of documents I provided him with. The Powder River Basin Resources Council is an environmental interest group based in Wyoming that is currently representing the interests of some citizens of Wyoming on the activities on the subject site in nearby Igloo, which is approximately 5 miles from the Wyoming border.

QUESTIONS DISCUSSED:

1) What have been Chem-Nuclear's activities so far on development of a South Dakota facility?
2) What will be the future activities?
3) What parts, if any, of a license application has the NRC received from CNSI?'

'. 4) What does NRC know about the facility, especially the hydrogeology of the site?

5) What opportunities are there for public participation in the licensing process?
6) What environmental documents are required by 10 CFR Part 617
7) What is the status of the Igloo site now, especially the possibility of the ground water already being contaminated?
