Dear Hs. Miemczky:

In the material 1 sent to you last ronth, there was information that caused some confusion. There appeared te be discrepancies between information about waste generation in Soutn Lakota given in the computer reports and that given in the pages fr w the 00E document.

To clear up the apparent discrepancy, the computer reports were generated from a data base used by the fdC that is prepared from the disposal site Waste shipment receipt records. TheserecordsdonotalwaysshowtheStatewherety.

waste was gererated. This is becaust rany waste generators use " brokers", or companies which package and ship waste for generators, and sometimes the brokers are located in States other than the State where the waste is generated. It seems th6t the generators of waste in South Dakota use brokers that are not in South Dakota. The disposa) site shipment receipt records and my corrputer reports, therefore, reflect the State that the broker is in rather than the generator. The table copied from the DOE document used another source of infonnation.

I have recently been able to acquire access to the data base that was used to compile the table that appeared in the DOE cocument. This data base was prepared from a waste generator survey conducted by the National Conference of Radiation Control Program Directors in 1982. Enclosed is a copy of one computer report from this data base which shows the breakdown of waste generation in South Dakota that is most like the information you requested, g 61 g 3 850207 PAYSS-S4 PM OFC IWMLU kJ  :  :  :  :  :
