_ __ General Emergency X Not Applicable

Subject:

UNAUTHORIZED TRANSFER AND DISPOSAL OF RADI0 ACTIVE WASTE On October 1, 1985 at 4:00 p.m., representative of the licensee reported to Region I the loss of wastes containing 265 microcuries o' iodine-125, 120 microcuries c f hydrogen-3, 50 microcuries of iodine 131, 0.01 microcuries of chlorine-36 and 2-3 millicuries of phosphorus-32. The licensee's representative stated that on September 27, 1985 an untrained custodial worker entered several of the laboratories in the licensee's research building, removed the wastes and emptied into the normal trash ccmpactor. The trash (approximately 5.8 tons) was removed from the licensee's premises on Saturday, September 28, 1985 to a commercial waste incineration and disposal site land fill in Saugus, Massachusetts where the waste was incinerated.

The Commonwealth of Massachusetts has been informed of this disposal.

The licensee will submit a full report concerning the loss within 30 days.

Region I has determined that the small amount of radioactive material in the total volume of waste when incinerated would not present a hazard to the health and safety of the public. This incident will be reviewed at a future inspection.
