1.0 PENETRATION UNDER TEST i

The control rod drive mechanism penetration contains 30 l cables each made up of (27) #I8AWG copper, (1) alumel and (1) chromel conductor. The prototype contains 10 cables, a number agreed upon as being sufficiently representative.

2.0 TEST PROCEDURE The penetration was initially checked for leakage with the Helium mass spectrometer leak detector. It was then pneumatically tested at 80 psig to volumetrically determine if any leakage occurred at this stress loading. The penetration was found leak tight. Elec-trical tests were performed to determine the insulation resistance and the dielectric strength test of the conductors before and after the accident envi ronment exposure.

An inboard weld ring was welded to the canister to enable attachment to the steam chamber.

Thermometer 0 - 100*C L&N Speedomax Recorder 6 point temperature Penetration Gage - Pressure 0 - 60 psig Steam Gage - Pressure 0 - 150 psig L&N Potentiometer 2 point General Radio Megohmeter 500 volts Prior to attaching the penetration to the steam chamber electrical connections were made to permit simulation of function during test. These connections are shown schematically in Figure 3.

127 VAC was applied to two conductors in cable No. 5 and retained for the duration of test.

Cable #1 had mated Amphenol Series 48 connectors attached to both ends. An external switch box permitted insulation resistance readings on an hourly basis. See Figures 5 and 6.

3.0 RESULTS OF THE TEST

1. Of,30 monitored conductors the insulation resistance during ,

steam testing was not lower than 2.5 x 107 ohms. l l

2. After completion of the test, the insulation resistance I measured at ambient temperature rose to 6 x 108 ohms or more for j 29 conductors.

3. The leak rate was found to be 3 x 10 l through the header.
