CLOSEOUT FOR REVIEW OF MATERIALS RELIABILITY PROGRAM (MRP): TECHNICAL BASIS FOR PREEMPTIVE WELD OVERLAYS FOR ALLOY 82/182 BUTT WELDS IN PRESSURIZED WATER REACTORS (MRP-169) (TAC NO. MC9779)

Dear Mr. Riley:

By letter dated September 7, 2005 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System(ADAMS) Accession No. ML052520325), the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) submitted for U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff review Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI)

Topical Report (TR) MRP-169, "Technical Basis for Preemptive Weld Overlays for Alloy 82/182 Butt Welds in PWRs [Pressurized Water Reactors]." By letter dated August 2, 2006 (ADAMS Accession No. ML061950468), the NRC issued an acceptance letter to NEI, which stated that the NRC would issue the request for additional information (RAI) by August 11, 2006, and the draft safety evaluation by January 15, 2007. The review schedule milestones were discussed and agreed upon in a telephone conference between you and the NRC staff on July 21, 2006. In a letter dated August 3, 2006 (ADAMS Accession No. ML062050337), the NRC staff issued athe RAI for TR MRP-169. In a telephone conversation on July 21, 2006, between you and the NRC staff, it was agreed upon that the RAI responses would be submitted to the NRC by September 29, 2006. The RAI response has not been received by the NRC. In addition, attempts by the NRC staff toobtain a revised milestone for the RAI response have been unsuccessful. As discussed with Mike Melton, Senior Project Manager, of your staff on April 19, 2007, all NRC staff efforts to support the review of TR MRP-169 have been discontinued and TAC MC9779 has been closed.Sincerely,/RA/Jennifer M.
