-0001 Re: Docket ID NRC
-2016-0195 ATTN: Rulemaking and Adjudications Staff:
The Upstate Energy Jobs Coalition is composed of hundreds of elected representatives at the local, state and federal levels, business leaders, members of labor organizations, educational institutions, community leaders and economic development organizations. The UEJ Coalition has been a strong advocate for keeping nuclear power plants in Upstate NY operating and has actively supported the State's Clean Energy Standard that incorporates nuclear power as a key component of addressing carbon-free electrical power generation. Approximately 30% of the State's electricity comes from nuclear and over 60% of the carbon
-free generation is from nuclear.
The FitzPatrick Nuclear Power Plant located in Oswego County, NY is a vital component of the energy generating economy. The plant employs 600 people, provides over 1,000 building tradesmen and skilled jobs for refueling, maintenance and outages. The plant has a regional economic impact of over $500 million annually, contributes yearly over $17 million in local and school property taxes and with an annual payroll of $70 million. The 850 megawatt plant helps to support the economy by providing reliable energy and has a positive impact on the environment by the avoidance of over 3 million tons of CO 2 emissions annually which represents about 10% of the carbon savings in New York State.
The UEJ Coalition fully supports the transference by the NRC of the operating license from Entergy to Exelon and supports the purchase of the FitzPatrick plant from Entergy by Exelon for $110 million. This would be a welcome outcome that would have a very positive and profound effect on our current and future economic prosperity.
We urge the NRC to give strong consideration for the license transfer and the proposed purchase of the plant by Exelon. We urge the NRC to support these transactions in a timely manner to allow for a closure on the acquisition by Exelon by April 1, 2017.
Sincerely, L. Michael Treadwell UEJ Coalition Member
