PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE PNO-II-08-008 This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of possible safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by Region II staff (Atlanta, Georgia) on this date.

SUBJECT:

UNIT 1 SHUTDOWN DUE TO LOSS OF 1B REACTOR COOLANT PUMP

At 5:31 p.m. (EDT) on June 26, 2008, the Unit 1 reactor automatically tripped from full power due to loss of the 1B Reactor Coolant Pump (RCP) (EN#44318). The RCP breaker tripped open on an electrical protective relay signal. The licensee is continuing to investigate the cause. All automatic protection and mitigation systems operated as expected. Initial estimates indicate that repair activities could take greater than 72 hours8.333333e-4 days <br />0.02 hours <br />1.190476e-4 weeks <br />2.7396e-5 months <br />.

The NRC resident inspectors responded to the site and monitored the licensee's response to the automatic shutdown of the reactor plant. Duke Energy Carolinas will respond to any media inquires.

Region II received initial notification of this occurrence by telephone from the NRC resident inspector at about 6:15 p.m. EDT on June 26, 2008.

The State of North Carolina has been informed.
