This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.
Facility Fort Calhoun Station Docket: 50-285 License No. DPR-40 Licensee Emergency Classification X Notification of Unusual Event Alert Site Area Emergency General Emergency Not Applicable
SUBJECT:
(UPDATE) Fort Calhoun Station Declaration of a Notification of Unusual Event Due to High River Level DESCRIPTION: This Preliminary Notification (PN) updates information discussed in PNO-IV-003, PNO-IV-003A, PNO-IV-003B, PNO-IV-003C, PNO-IV-003D and PNO-IV-003E. On August 29, 2011, at 1:42 p.m. (CDT), the licensee exited the Notification of Unusual Event. The licensee's decision was based on the fact that the Missouri River level had decreased to 1003 feet and 6 inches, with a decreasing trend, and no predicted adverse weather conditions that could negatively impact this trend. The Fort Calhoun Station had originally declared the Notification of Unusual Event on June 6, 2011.
Based on an assessment that conditions in and around the facility have remained stable, the NRC has made the decision to suspend the 7 day on-site coverage at the Fort Calhoun Station beginning on August 30, 2011. The region will continue to assess the licensee's actions as the river level changes as predicted by the U.S. Army Corp. of Engineers.
The information presented herein has been discussed with the licensee and is current as of 9:00 a.m., August 30, 2011.
