Dear Mr. DeYoung:
Our April 29, 1983, letter to the NRC indicated that the RCIC pump /
turbine on the Perry Nuclear Power Plant could, as presently designed, operate without adequate room cooling, since the cooling water supply to the fan coil was not automatically put in service when the RCIC turbine starts. This item was classified as reportable under the provisions of 10 CFR Part 21, and corrective actions were initiated to automatically provide cooling water to the pump room cooling unit when the RCIC turbine starts.
Having reviewed seventeen (17) of forty-eight (48) safe shutdown systems for similar discrepancies, and finding none, Gilbert / Commonwealth has concluded that Reportable Event No. 067 was an isolated case.
Evaluation of applicability to the remaining safety related systems on the Perry Project is being assessed during the continuing process of system finalization. Any similar instances identified in this process will be corrected.
