NRG FO R M 699 (03-20 1 3) SUMM A R Y. (C o nt i nued from page 1) U.S. NUCLEAR REGULA T ORY COMM I SSIO N C ON V ER S AT IO N RE COR D (co ntinu ed) On January 17 , 2019 , GNF-A participated on a phone call with the NRC staff (thereafter, the staff) to clarify questions related to the request for supplemental information (RSI) related to the revalidation recommendation request from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for the Model No. TK-C69 transportation package. The discussion was focused on RSis Th-2 , Th-4, and Th-5. the following is a summary of the discussion with GNF-A: RSI-Th-2 and Th-4 GNF-A asked if this question is similar to the requirement in Part 71 , to demonstrate that the package will stand temperature changes from ambient temperatures to extreme cold and heat conditions. The staff pointed out that the evaluation for the package should include the effects of thermal stresses to the package under extreme cold and heat conditions as required in the IAEA regulations.

Therefore , the applicant needs to provide information about the performance of the package under these conditions. In terms Th-4 , GNF-A mentioned that paragraph 653(b) is applicable to Type B packages and the Model No. TK-C69 would be transporting Type A contents. The staff mentioned that there is an RSI question related to confirm the type on content to be transported in the Model No. TK-C69 , just to confirm that the package will be used to transport only Type A material.

RSI -Th-5 GNF-A asked if this question was focused on providing information regarding the effects of thermal stresses in the package at extreme heat conditions , since Chapter 3 of the application does not include this information. The staff pointed out that the applicant should explain how the thermal evaluation considered gaps between components and identify these gaps in its response. The staff mentioned that adding a statement in the application about these items should be sufficient at the acceptance review phase. GNF-A agreed to verify if the need of this action has changed and to provide an estimated time frame in which it would submit the RSI responses.
