AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMP ENDURANCE TEST REPORT SURRY POWER STATION UNITS 1 AND 2

Introduction

2.

As stated in our letter Serial No. 149/020880, dated March 21, 1980, we have performed the subject tests in accordance with the NRC's letter of September 25, 1979, as revised by the NRC letter dated February 8, 1980.

A 48-hour endurance test has been performed on all three Surry. Unit 1 auxiliary feedwater (AFW) pumps (two motor-driven,, one steam turbine-driven) and on two motor-driven Surry Unit 2 AFW pumps.

The Unit 2 steam turbine-driven AFW pump will be tested when that unit returns to service and steam is available.

The results of the tests perfonned to date are summarized below.

Test Description A.

The tests were run as follows:

After achieving rated speed and pump discharge pressure for the recirculation flow path (described below), the pumps were run for 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br />.

Steam temperature was as close to normal operating temperature as practical.

The pumps were shutdown at the end of 48 hours5.555556e-4 days <br />0.0133 hours <br />7.936508e-5 weeks <br />1.8264e-5 months <br /> and allowed to cool down until pump temperatures were within 20°F of their values at the start of the test or for a mini-mum of 8 hours9.259259e-5 days <br />0.00222 hours <br />1.322751e-5 weeks <br />3.044e-6 months <br />, whichever was longer.

The pumps were then restarted and run for one hour.

B.

Test Method and Instrumentation:

The tests were run with the pump suction lines aligned to the emer-gency condensate storage tank (ECST) and the pump discharges aligned to recirculate to the ECST at a reduced flow rate.

A schematic diagram of this recirculation flow path is shown in Attachment 1 and is the same as that utilized for the existing performance surveil-lance procedures.

Pump suction and discharge pressures, condensaLe temperature, ambient room temperature and bearing lube oil temperatures were recorded via local gauge indicators.

Bearing lube oil temperatures were recorded in lieu of bearing temperatures as there are no means installed for measuring bearing temperatures directly.

Test Conditions:

As shown in Attachment 2, Table 1, pump speeds and heads did not exceed design operating conditions.

Pump flows were acceptable through the recirculation paths.

Steam temperature was approxi-mately 500°F.

Pump head curves are provided as Attachment 3.

Bearing Oil Temperatures:

Bulk bearing lube oil temperatures were recorded directly at the lube oil reservoirs.

Lube oil temperature is plotted as a function of time for each of the pump/drivers tested and these plots are included as Attachments 4 through 8.

Note that bearing oil tempera-tures did not exceed the design operating maximum of 180°F at anytime during the tests.

Bearing oil temperature did, however, tend to follow the condensate temperature which increased over the duration of the test due to pump heat.

The bearing oil coolers are cooled with recirculated condensate which, as it heats up, will less effectively cool the bearing oil.

This is to be expected during a test such as this and would not occur during actual operation of the pumps as the condensate, not being recirculated to the ECST, would not heat up significantly.

Pump Room Environmental Conditioqs:

Pump room temperature as a function of time is plotted in Attach-ments 9, 10 and 11 for the pumps tested..

Humidity data was not taken but is assumed to be 100% RH due to the room's free air exchange with the outdoors.

The environmental qualification of safety-related equipment in this area, as well as* in the rest of the plant, is being addressed by our Environmental Qualification Program established in response to IE Bulletins 79-01 and 79-0.lB.

Mr. Victor Stello received a copy of our letter of June 16, 1980, Serial No. 527., submitting qualifica-tion information and providing completion dates. for the remainder of our qualification efforts.

Pump Vibration Measurements:, Table 2 provides pump vibration data taken during the test.

Vibration parameters measured did not exceed design allowable limits during the tests.
