dated September 18,1985, with enclosed Safety Evaluation Gentlemen:

This is to clarify the alternate examinations specified in the referenced letter's enclosed Safety Evaluation per a recent telephone conference.

Your letter correctly stated our proposed alternate examinations as:

... (1) pump interior examination to the extent practical in the event that a pump is disassembled, (2) hydrostatic testing, ~and (3) surface examination of one reactor coolant pump's casing welds, per unit, and a 100% visual examination of this pump's exterior.... " Page 6 of the enclosed Safety Evaluation restated part of our proposed examinations incorrectly

"... a visual inspection of the casing exterior surface will be performed during the as:

hydrostatic test of the reactor coolant system...."

The reactor coolant pumps will be examined in accordance with ASME Code Section XI 1974 edition with addenda through Summer 1975, Article IWA-5240 during the hydrostatic test.

One pump per unit will receive a visual inspection of the casing exterior surface in accordance with Article IWA-2210; this examination will not be d

performed during the hydrostatic test.
