MANUAL REACTOR SCRAM AND SHUTDOWN GREATER THAN 3 DAYS j

At 11:38 pm on December 6.1996, operators at Limerick Unit 2 manually scrammed the reactor due to an electro-hydraulic control (EHC) oil leak at the No. 2 turbine control valve. Unit I was not affected by the Unit 2 event. An EHC pressure switch broke free from its support and ruptured the oil line.

Plant personnel were alerted to the event by a turbine control valve half-scram and low EHC reservoir level.

Following the scram the EHC leak was isolated to allow reactor pressure control with turbine bypass valves.

Post-scram reactor response was as expected.

The licensee has implemented a one week maintenance outage to repair the EHC pressure switch and several other balance of plant and drywell items.

The licensee expects to restart the unit on Friday. December 13.

The resident inspectors will continue to follow the event. The licensee has issued a j

press release.
