Your letter of January 12, 1989 suggested that access to the NRC Safety Issue Management System (SIMS) would assist your department in its attempts to track resolution and implementation of nuclear plant safety issues.
As you may know, the NRC SIMS database was developed in the 1987 timeframe as a means of tracking the status of generic safety issue resolution and implementation on a plant specific basis. We are presently in the process of verifying the accuracy of the plant specific data and expect to complete this task by mid 1989. At that time, we will be pleased to share with you on a quarterly basis the plant specific implementation status for plants located in the State of Illinois. Mr. Edward G. Greenman, the NRC Region III, Division Director with the responsibility for the Illinois nuclear plants will contact Mr. Gary Wright of your staff to arrange a meeting to discuss the implementation status data as soon as We complete our data verification process.

As you may know, the NRC SIMS database was developed in the 1987 timeframe as a means of tracking the status of safety issues from onception to final verification of implementation. Although the sys m is operational, we are currently implementing significant changes to im rove the definitions and accuracy of the entries, add Generic Letters a                     Bulletins, and remove duplicative entries. We expect that the bulk f these improvements will be completed by mid 1989, and at that time, we ill be pleased to share this information with you and provide quarterly pdates so that your department can carry out its state responsibilities. Fur her, as you suggested, we will meet with representatives of your department                     explain the SIMS system. I suggest that Mr. Gary Wright of your department contact Mr. Daniel R. Muller, the Project Director with the responsibili y for the Illinois nuclear plants, to arrange such a meeting.

FEB 2 81983 Terry R. Lash, Director State of Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety 1035 Outer Park Drive Sprir.gfield, Illinois 62704

Dear Mr. Lash:

-Your lettcr of January 12, 1989 suggested that access to the NRC Safety Issue Management System (SIMS) would assist your department in its attempts to track resolstion and implementation of nuclear plant safety issues.

Gary Wright of your steff to arrange a meeting to discuss the implementation status data as soon as we complete our data verification process.

Sincerely, eI Thomas E. Murley, Director Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation cc:
