The licensee is authorized by the NRC to use special nuclear material in the manufacturing, testing, and calibration of fission chambers. At the time of the inspection, the licensee had six authorized users (AUs) and several trained employees who handled special nuclear material under the supervision of the AUs. The licensee's possession and use of byproduct material was authorized through their State of Ohio licens PERFORMANCE OBSERVATIONS The inspector toured the areas where special nuclear material was stored and used to observe the licensee's measures for material security, contamination control, airborne monitoring, and hazard communication. The inspector also performed independent and confirmatory surveys which indicated results consistent with licensee survey records and postings. The inspector interviewed licensee personnel with regard to the use of special nuclear material in fission chamber production and testing as well as inventory tracking, surveys, training, package receipt and shipment, and waste handling, and found licensee personnel to be knowledgeable of NRC requirements and the licensee's procedures. The inspector reviewed records associated with material receipt and transfer, license verification, leak testing, personnel dosimetry, surveys, waste disposal, effluent monitoring, radiation safety committee minutes, and periodic program review No findings of significance were identified.
