Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Troy, New York 12181 March 1, 1984 Director Division of Reactor Licensing U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, D. C. 20545 Re: Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Facility License CX-22 Docket 50-225 Annual Report of Tests and Experiments
Dear Sir:
This report of tests and experiments is submitted, in accordance with Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 50.59, for the period March 1, 1982 to March 1, 1983.
The fuel plates used comprised a core loading of 152 MTR type, flat, stationary plated and 24 MTR type flat, control rod plates. One stationary plate is stored in the fuel vault. All of the fuel plates are leased by the U. S. Depart-ment of Energy under Contract DE-AC02-76ER03457.
Through periods January 1, 1982 to May 1982 and May 1982 to July 1982, the Facility was used to conduct a graduate level course on reactor experiments for classes of 15 and 7 students, respectively. The Facility was also used for 2 weeks in July and August for an operational reactor physics and engineering course for 3 engineers from Rochester Cas and Electric Company. Further, two students were in project work at the Facility to satisfy degree requirements.
The reactor experiments course is currently being taught.to 15 studants.
Routine scheduled maintenance was performed in June, January and February.
One Master's project was completed during the report period. This project raa-sured sensitivity to bubble voids in the center cell and measured transport times. _
The experiments, operations, and topics covered in association with the use of the Facility remain the same as described .in previous reports.

Page 2 March 1, 1984 All activities and experiments have been conducted in accordance with our NRC reactor License CX-22. Our activities did not involve any unreviewed safet>
questions. CX-22 was relicensed on December 2, 1983, for a twenty-year period.
The Technical Specifications were modified. The maximum allowable excess reac-tivity is now .60$. Safety Evaluation Report (NUREG-1023) issued October, 1983 related to the renewal.
