RE: Re: Additional Information Request re Jackson Community College renewal, NRC Lie. No. SNM-1171, CN609205 Thank you, Mr. DeMarco, for the prompt response.

That is great news re finding a facility to accept the remaining cobalt-60 sealed source. Do you have an idea as to the time frame in which you will be getting rid of that source? This would be very helpful information in providing your response.

Regarding the request for additional information, it is based on our NU REG 1556 guidance, together with possession-only-with-intent-to-dispose supplemental guidance, issued to assist licensees in meeting decommissioning criteria needed for continued compliance with 10 CFR 30.36. Although the existing license includes a reference (application dated July 18, 2005, Accession No. ML052020417) to the original version of the NUREG 1556, Volume 17, "Program-Specific Guidance About Special Nuclear Material of Less than Critical Mass Licenses," guidance document, dated November 2000, that volume has been superceded by NUREG 1556, Vol. 17, rev. 1, dated July 2018. In addition, since you no longer are in possession of Special Nuclear Material, that volume is no longer the applicable volume; the NU REG 1556, Vol. 7, rev. 1 is the appropriate volume for your program. Accordingly, without additional explanation, the NRC expects that applicants and licensees will follow the current revision to the appropriate volume in providing a response.

The NRC also expects additional details sufficient to assure continued compliance with 10 CFR 30.36. I am available for a call today until 3:30 pm central (4:30 pm eastern), tomorrow/Wednesday and Friday between 9 am and 2 pm central (10 am -3 pm eastern), and Thursday between 7 and 9 am central (8 -10 am eastern).

Please feel free to call me to review the request or let me know a good time to call you. Sincerely, Sara Forster U.S. NRC From: DeMarco Chris J [1]

Re: Additional Information Request re Jackson Community College renewal, NRC Lie. No. SNM-1171, CN609205 Hi Sara: Yes I did, and I apologize for not getting in touch earlier, meant to do so this week, but I've been down with the flu. I looked at the document, and to be honest, I didn't really understand it, as it doesn't appear to be similar to any documents I filed the last several times I've renewed the license. The good news is I have found a facility that will accept the Cobalt-GO source, so if I could speak with you about the easiest way for me do to that, I'd appreciate it. I'd like to get this wrapped up as soon as I can, as I'll be retiring in May. Anyway, I'll get hold of you week after next, and hopefully you can walk me through what I need to do. Take care, Chris DeMarco From: Forster, Sara <Sara.Forster@nrc.gov>

Additional Information Request re Jackson Community College renewal, NRC Lie. No. SNM-1171, CN609205

Dear Mr. DeMarco:

We have reviewed your June 27, 2018 application (NRC Accession No. ML 18178A420) requesting renewal of the above-listed radioactive materials license, where all principal activities have ceased 2 and the licensee's only authorization is a cobalt-60 sealed source, for possession and storage only with intent to dispose. Upon review, we have noted that the application omits information requested in the NRC's NUREG 1556 Vol. 7, rev. 1, "Program-Specific Guidance About Academic, Research and Development, and Other Licenses of Limited Scope, Including Electron Capture Devices and X-Ray Fluorescence Analyzers," guidance volume. I will attempt to call you in the next 1 to 3 business days to follow up with this request. As we will discuss, please see attached for information needed to complete our review of your request. To facilitate our continued review of your request, please provide additional information

-via a signed and dated cover letter and resubmitted supporting information

-as noted in the attached record. Please provide the requested information within 28 days of this message (on or before November 15, 2018). Include a signed and dated cover letter transmitting your response.

Submission of your response as a pdf file attached to an email or via facsimile will allow for the quickest processing.

Please call or email me with any questions you may have, or if you are unable to respond by the date suggested above. Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter. Sincerely yours, Sara A.
