Dear Mr. Goyette:
On behalf of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), I am responding to your most recent letter dated June 17, 2007, regarding your concerns about the vulnerability of the Oyster Creek Nuclear Generating Station (Oyster Creek) to potential terrorist threats.
In our previous letters, we explained the approval process for license renewal and the NRCs oversight of nuclear power plant safety. The NRCs response to concerns cited in your most recent letter is set forth below.
We acknowledge that terrorism is an issue that must be addressed. We disagree with your statements that Oyster Creek is not adequately defended and the only way to prevent a successful terrorist attack is to cease operations. The NRC has taken actions to strengthen security and safety at nuclear facilities, which provide enhanced protection against terrorist attacks.
As we have indicated in previous letters, the NRC takes seriously its regulatory mission of protecting public health and safety and the environment, and promoting the common defense and security of the United States. Information regarding the details of the Oyster Creek protective strategy is sensitive and is not available to the public. We have no additional information to provide you to allay your concerns regarding these issues.
I trust that this information is responsive to your letter.
Sincerely,
/RA/
