• SharpeArmyDepotwasestablishedin1941andisapproximately720acres

• Formostofitsexistence,theinstallationsprincipalmissionshavebeento store,ship,andpackagegeneralsuppliesandmaintainequipment.

• Earlymissionincludedrepairandreconditioningofbothheavyequipment vehicles,helicoptersandfixedwingedaircraft.

• SharpeArmyDepotwastransitionedtotheDefenseLogisticsAgencyin 1997andrenamedDefenseDistributionDepotSanJoaquin.

• In2013,theinstallationwastransferredbacktotheArmyanddesignatedto InstallationManagementCommand.ThePresidioofMontereywas designatedwithcaretakerauthorityuntilthepropertyisexcessed.

• Duringthe1960s,solidwastefrompaintstrippingoperationswasregularly mixedintothesoilsandburnedatSHAD041(ESE,1994a).

• OtherwastesdisposedofatSHAD041burnpitsincludewood,paper,empty paint/solventcans,wastepaint/solvents,wasteoil,usedhydraulicfluidand anythingelsethatwouldburn.(ESE,1994a)

• Radiumpaint,dials,gaugesandothercommoditiesmayhavealsobeen disposedofattheSHAD041burnpits(Tidewater,2012).

• ContaminatedfuelwasnotreportedlydisposedofatSHAD041(ESE,1994a).

• SHAD041iscurrentlynolongeractivelyused.

• AtPresent:

• ArmyandAirForceExchangeServiceoperatesadistributioncenterin thesouthernportionoftheDepot.

• TheMarinesconductmilitaryreservetraininginthenorthwestern cornerofSharpeArmyDepot.

• TheCaliforniaArmyNationalGuardownsapproximately53acresinthe northernportionofSharpeArmyDept.

• 2011-OU2RODAmendmentimplementedLUCsatSHAD041toprotect humanhealthandtheenvironment(URS,2011).

• 2012 Agammawalkoversurveywasperformedoverthemajorityof SHAD041.Levelsofradioactivityweredetectedabovebackground.

• Twosoilsamplelocationswereidentifiedatlocationswiththehighest directmeasurementsidentifiedduringthewalkoversurvey.

• Sampleswerecollectedfromtwointervals:06and618andwere sentforoffsiteanalysis.Totalradiumconcentrationswereabove background(Tidewater,2012).

• Asatemporarysafetymeasure,afenceandwarningsignswereinstalled aroundtheareaofhighestpotentialradiologicalconcern.

• FieldworkwascompletedOct2017.

• Forradium226,approximately21samplelocationswereselected; multiplesampleswerecollectedatdifferentdepths(fromsurfaceto14 feetbelowgroundsurface)ateachlocation.

• The DraftRI/FSReportisscheduledforcompletioninSpring2018.
