| | COMPANY NL-14-0050 Vogtle Electric Generating Plant-Units 1 & 2 Clarification to Proposed lnservice Inspection Alternatives VEGP-ISI-ALT-05 Version 1 and VEGP-ISI-ALT-06 Version 1 Ladies and Gentlemen: |
| | By letter dated August 29, 2012, and as supplemented by letter dated November 25, 2013, Southern Nuclear Operating Company (SNC) requested Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) approval of proposed inservice inspection (lSI) Alternatives VEGP-ISI-ALT-05, Version 1 and VEGP-ISI-ALT-06, Version 1. These alternatives propose one-time extensions of reactor vessel examinations from a ten-year examination period to a twenty-year examination period for their respective unit. Specifically, these alternatives request one-time extensions to selected ASME Examination Category B-A reactor vessel welds and selected ASME Examination Category B-D reactor vessel nozzle welds and reactor vessel inside radius sections. |
| | Based on discussion with the NRC, further clarification is needed regarding the Interval Date for the Alternatives. |
| | SNC requested approval for exam exemption during the 3rd lSI Interval, which is from May 31, 2007 through May 30, 2017. Rather than requesting an exam extension, SNC should have requested an extension of the 3rd lSI Interval, in which the exams would be performed during an extended 3rd lSI Interval. |
| | This is approach is in line with the wording in WCAP-16168-NP-A. |
| | The approval of VEGP-ISI-ALT-05, Version 1 and VEGP-ISI-ALT-06, Version 1 will allow examinations identified in VEGP-ISI-ALT-05, Version 1 and VEGP-ISI-ALT-06, Version 1 that are currently scheduled for the 3rd lSI interval to be delayed until the end of the extended 3rd lSI interval. |
| | U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission NL-14-0050 Page 2 In addition, SNC had listed the Duration of Proposed Alternative on the August 29, 2012 letter as the 3rd and 4th intervals, since the inspections would be delayed until the 4th lSI interval. |
| | However, the requested Duration of Proposed Alternative should only state the 3rd interval. |
| | The Alternatives will not affect the proposed examination dates of the 4th interval that were indicated in the letter dated August 29, 2012, as supplemented by the letter dated November 25, 2013. This letter contains no NRC commitments. |

COMPANY NL-14-0050 Vogtle Electric Generating Plant-Units 1 & 2 Clarification to Proposed lnservice Inspection Alternatives VEGP-ISI-ALT-05 Version 1 and VEGP-ISI-ALT-06 Version 1 Ladies and Gentlemen:
