SUBJECT:

Waterford 3 SES Docket No. 50-382 Toxic Chemient Surveys

REFERENCES:

1) LP&L Letter W3P83-2540 dated 8/3/83
2) LP&L Letter W3P83-3596 dated 11/9/83

Dear Sir:

The referenced letters discussed LP&L's plans for conducting surveys of major industries in the vicinity of Waterford 3 which could have significant inventories of toxic chemicals onsite. The purpose of this letter is to confirm agreements reached with the NRC reviewer regarding a revised subnittal schedule for the survey results.

LP&L will complete the entire oirvey and subsequent analyses (with one possible exception) prior to fuel load. The possible exception concerns General American Transportation Company (CATX), with whom negotiations thus frir have failed to produce the desired information, linwever, GATX is not a large facility and review of the type and quantity of chemical inventories previously reported by GATX suggests that it is unlikely that the information currently being sought from them would change the conclusions presented in the FSAR.

Analyses will be on file prior to fuel load demonatrating that the toxic chemical inventories represented by the survey results will not cause a safety problem exceeding the bounds of what has been previously considered acceptable.

In the event that the analyses do uncover a potentici problem, the NRC will be notified prior ti-fuel load.

Subsequent to this survey, a new survey will be conducted every four years.

Yours very truly, g6 aa K. W. Cook Nuclear Support & Licensing Manager KWC/RMF/cb cc:
