Subject:

Clinton Power Statiott Hydrogen Mixing Compressor Room Modification

Dear Sir:

The purpose of this letter is to inform the.NRC of the completion of modifications to the Clinton hydrogen mixing compressor rooms.

Illinois Power Company identified the neer! to modify.the two rooms ir. side containment which contain the Combustible Gas Control System hydrogen mixing compressors in IPC letter'U-600850 dated March 11, 1987.

It was noted in this letter that, as configured,,the rooms did not meet i

the originally 1.ntended. function of protecting the contained equipment from post-accident environma,ntal conditions in the event of rapid containment pressurization.

It was decided that the doors to.these rooms would be removed to eliminate the concern of sealed room response-to rapid pressurization and to eliminate the need to classify the rooms as enclosed area. In addition, removing the doors would negate.the requirement for hydrogen igniters in the room. -As a result of this-proposed. modification, it would be necessary to upgrade' the-

]

environmental qualification of the equipment in the rooms.-

The removal of the doors to the hydrogen mixing-compressor rooms has been completed. The safety-related room coolers will continue to l

start with the mixing compressors, mixing the air in the rooms, but will l

no longer maintain the air temperature in the rooms below 150'F.

Since I

the air temperature in the rooms may now reach 185*F, the equipment qualification packages have been upgraded from 150*F to 185'F for the equipment in these rooms (e.g. mixing compressors, drywell isolation valves and room coolers).

j l

The Clinton Power Station Final Safety Analysis Report will be revised during the next update to include the new equipment j

l environmental qualification data for the affected components.
