SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 MOTOR OPERATORS FOR MANUAL VALVES SDAR: CP-86-35 (INTERIM REPORT)

Gentlemen:

On June 2,1986, we verbally notified you of a reportable item involving the motor operators for several valves in the main steam system (see TXX-4840).

Our most recent report was submitted September 12, 1986.

This report is submitted to status corrective actions implemented to date.

In our previous report we indicated that design activities were scheduled to be completed by April 1987. These activities are now scheduled to be completed this month.

These design changes are currently being developed under DM 86-106

" Replacement of Main Steam System to Steam Generator Blow-down System HELB Isolation Valves" (Unit 1) and PPF-2-1029 " Replacement of Main Steam System to Steam Generator Blow-down System HELB Isolation Valves" (Unit 2) to modify the existing design.

Engineering has completed procedure PP-074 " Engineering and Design Requirements for ASME XI Repairs and Replacement / Modifications". These requirements are being implemented in the design documents included in DM 86-l 106 and PPF-2-1029 above for Units 1 and 2.

The redesign requires the modified manually operated valves be restored to their original condition and additional air-operated valves be installed to provide for the double HELB isolation capabilities described in FSAR Section 7.6.12.2.

A purchase order has been placed for eight air-operated valves for Unit 1 l

and 2.

We anticipate submitting our next report on this issue no later than August 4, 1987.

Very truly yours, Mtot-W. G. Counsil
