SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 CLASS 1E BATTERY CHARGERS SDAR: CP-86-37 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On May 14, 1986, we verbally notified your Mr. I. Barnes of a deficiency involving firing board assemblies and amplifier boards used in Class IE battery chargers that do not conform to vendor assembly drawings. This is an interim report of a potentially reportable item under the provision of 10CFR50.55(e). We have submitted interim reports logged TXX-4855 and TXX-4914, dated July 13, 1986, and July 16, 1986, respectively. We received an extension in submitting this report from your Mr. T. Westerman until September 10, 1986.

Evaluation of this issue has shown that non-Class 1E parts were purchased for a Class 1E system. This was due to an engineering error in determining the proper part.from the vendor drawing. We are trying to confirm that this is an isolated event. We are continuing our evaluation and anticipate submitting our next report by October 15, 1986.

Very truly yours, bV L;4 W. G. Counsil i 8609180223.860910 By: /_r PDR ADOCK 05000445 G. S. Keeley S
