SUBJECT:

COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION (CPSES)

DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 COMPONENT COOLING WATER PUMP IMPELLER LINEAR INDICATIONS SDAR: CP-86-11 (INTERIM REPORT)

Dear Mr. Johnson:

On February 24, 1986, we verbally notified you of a deficiency involving linear indications on impellers for the component cooling water pumps. We have submitted interim reports logged TXX-4741 and TXX-4856, dated March 26, 1986, and June 13, 1986, respectively. We have concluded that this deficiency is reportable under the provisions of 10CFR50.55(e). The evaluation of this issue is continuing and we anticipate submitting our next report by September 23, 1986.

Very truly yours,

%n W. G. Co il

. ATTACHMENT COMPONENT COOLING WATER PUMP IMPELLER LINEAR INDICATIONS DESCRIPTION During normal maintenance cleaning of one of the two Unit 2 component cooling water pumps, a visual inspection of the rotating element rcvealed what appeared to be cracks in the impeller casting. These cracks (assumed to be the result of casting shrinkage) were subjected to nondestructive examinations.

Test results concluded repair of these components was required. Subsequent examinations have revealed similar indications on the other Unit 2 pump and the replacement spare pump impellers.

Further investigations have indicated the Unit I component cooling water pump impellers were manufactured using the same casting method. As a result, this issue has been expanded to include Unit 1 installations.

The component cooling water pumps supply water to facilitate heat removal from the engineered safety features (ESF) system, safety related equipment, and non-safety related equipment.

Unit 2 and the replacement spare impellers have been identified using Construction and Operations nonconformance reports respectively. Concerns regarding the Unit 1 pump impellers have been documented by TUGCo Operations Problem Reports. All examinations have been performed under the auspices of the vendor (Bingham-Willamete) representative.

SUMMARY

OF EVENTS Date Discovered: January 24, 1986, per NCR-20,613.

Date NRC Notified as Potentially Reportable: February 24, 1986.

Interim Report to NRC: March 26, 1986, and June 13, 1986.

Date Determined Reportable: June 23, 1986.

SAFETY IMPLICATIONS In the event the linear indications had remained undete:ted, progressive cracking in the impellers could possibly render the component cooling water pumps inoperable.

CORRECTIVE ACTION All component cooling water pump impellers provided to CPSES will be inspected and repaired based upon the parameters provided by the supplier.

The inspection and repair of the linear indications on the Unit 2 component cooling water (CCW) pump impellers have been completed. A requisition for the

, off-site repair of the replacement " spare" impeller is currently being processed. Upon completion of this requisition processing and approval, the replacement " spare" impeller will be repaired.

I ATTACHMENT COMPONEENT C0OLING WATER PUMP IMPELLER LINEAR INDICATIONS (Continued)

The inspection of the Unit 1 CCW pump impellers has been planned but has not yet been scheduled. Upon completion of this inspection, the extent of the required rework will be determined and the repair, as required, will be accomplished. This inspection and repair work is currently scheduled for completion by September 2, 1986.
