20555 SUJBECT: COMANCHE PEAK STEAM ELECTRIC STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-445 AND 50-446 REACTOR VESSEL PRESERVICE INSPECTION
Dear Sir:
Texas Utilities letter TXX-3590 dated November 16, 1982, discussed the Texas Utilities position on the CPSES Unit 1 Reactor Vessel Inspection. Subsequent discussions with the NRC Staff and the issuance of the NRC internal memorandum from W. V. Johnson to T. H. Novak dated January 13, 1983, has caused us to modify this position.
It is our intention to perform the Reactor Vessel Preservice Inspection in early April 1983. The inspection will consist of:
(1) a standard ASME Code Section XI inspection; and (2) an additional inspection of the beltline region welds utilizing the Westinghouse shallow angle near surface technique.
The near surface defect examination will be conducted &t a 20% DAC sensitivity level and will meet the requirements of Regulatory Guide 1.150 or the EPRI Ad Hoc Comittee recommended changes as

For the purposes of this letter the beltline region w' elds are defined as:
(1) circumferential weld no. 3 and (2) intersecting longtudinal welds nos. 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14.
Should it prove feasible, we also intend to perform an identi al inspection of the Unit 2 Reactor Vessel upon completion of the Unit 1 vessel inspection.
