TMI-12-001 January 17. 2012 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission ATIN: Document Control Desk Washington. DC 20555-0001 Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 Renewed Facility Operating License No. DPR-50 NRC Docket No. 50-289

Subject:

Three Mile Island, Unit 1 "Correction of Steam Generator Tube Gap Size"

Reference:

Letter from P. Bamford (U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission) to M. J. Pacilio (Exelon Generation Company, LLC), 'Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 -

Summary of conference calls with Exelon Generation Company, LLC to discuss 2011 Steam Generator Tube Inspections (TAC NO. ME7229)" dated December 28,2011 Exelon Generation Company, LLC (Exelon) personnel have identified that the referenced December 28, 2011, letter, 'Three Mile Island Nuclear Station, Unit 1 - Summary of conference calls with Exelon Generation Company, LLC to discuss 2011 Steam Generator Tube Inspections (TAC NO.

ME7229)" incorrectly documented the gap between Steam Generator (SG) tubes and the conference call dates.

The first sentence of the first paragraph in the referenced letter stated:

"On November 3, November 7, and November 11, 2011, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff participated in conference calls with Exelon Generation Company, LLC personnel to discuss the steam generator inspection activities taking place at Three Mile Island, Unit 1 during the 2011 refueling outage."

This statement should have read:

"On November 3, November 7, and November 9, 2011, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) staff participated in conference calls with Exelon Generation Company, LLC personnel to discuss the steam generator inspection activities taking place at Three Mile Island, Unit 1 during the 2011 refueling outage."

In addition, the final bullet on page 3 of the enclosure to the referenced letter stated:

"The licensee also indicated that the tubes are in compression during operations (hot conditions) and that the gap between the tubes is 1/8 inches."

This statement should have read:

"The licensee also indicated that the tubes are in compression during operations (hot conditions) and that the gap between the tubes is 1/4 inches."

U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission January 17, 2012 Page 2 The errors in dates and gap distance between SG tubes documented in the referenced December 28, 2011, letter do not affect the performance of any equipment, and have no effect on the health and safety of the public. The errors were discussed with the NRC NRR Project Manager on January 5, 2012 and January 12, 2012. As a result of those discussions, it was determined that Exelon would write a follow-up letter of clarification to correct the information on the docket.

Should you have any questions concerning this letter, please contact Ms. Wendy Croft at (610) 765-5726.

Respectfully, Michael D.
