Regarding Security Concern at SNPS Shoreham Nuclear Power Station - Unit 1 Docket No. 50-322 Ref: (1)

USNRC letter dated July 7, 1993 to L.

Hill from Charles W.

Hehl

Dear Mr. Hehl:

In the reference 1 letter, you requested that Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) review and resolve a security concern regarding certain activities at the Shoreham Nuclear Power Station (SNPS).

In response to your request, LIPA has conducted a thorough and objective review which we believe is sufficient in scope and

.t depth to resolve this matter.

LIPA's review involved personnel interviews and the conduct of unannounced challenges to the subject area.

Interviews were conducted with the security supervisors, the guard force, and other individuals concerning access of personnel and materials to the subject area.

LIPA is convinced that these individuals abide by and understand our procedures, and that they have observed no deviation from our established criteria.

Furthermore, on two occasions involving different personnel on different shifts, LIPA management observed security " challenges" involving search requirements that were conducted in the subject area.

On both occasions, security personnel-conducted the required searches according to procedure and post orders.

As an additional measure, the Nuclear Quality Assurance Department conducted an independent unannounced " challenge", and it was observed that the post orders were followed completely.

and conclusion described in the enclosure to Reference 1, and lead LIPA to conclude that the security supervisors, guard force, and other individuals with access to the subject area, are knowledgeable of the applicable requirements; are properly trained and are diligent in conducting the required searches in the subject area.

LIPA therefore concP-des that there is no basis to believe that any deviations f'om *.he established criteria have occurred.
