NRC Conducted Second Town Hall Meeting on Vendor Oversight

On June 21, 2023, the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation staff conducted its Second Town Hall Meeting on Vendor Oversight. The virtual meeting had over 160 participants from 10 different countries. Staff provided presentations on the post-pandemic return to full implementation of the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) inspection and oversight activities, fire retardant decaBDE rulemaking follow-up activities, Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations Part 21 reporting, and sample sizes in commercial grade dedication. The remainder of the Town Hall Meeting was dedicated to an open question and answer session where the meeting participants had an opportunity to ask questions of the NRC staff on a variety of topics related to Quality Assurance.

NRC Finalized Information Notice, Recent Human Performance Issues at Non-Power Production and Utilization Facilities

On June 13, 2023, the NRC finalized the Information Notice entitled, Recent Human Performance Issues at Non-Power Production and Utilization Facilities, (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML23059A539), to inform addressees of recent events at Non-power Production and Utilization Facilities that were attributed, at least in part, to human performance or safety culture issues.

NRC Accepted a License Amendment Request from Framatome

On June 21, 2023, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) accepted Framatomes request to amend License No. SNM-1227 and to approve the extension of Framatomes methodology for determining the minimum margin of sub-criticality to include enrichments up to 20 weight percent Uranium-235. The NRC anticipates completing its formal review in December 2023. The request will support a future license amendment request regarding production of High-Assay Low-Enriched Uranium fuel for the Ultra Safe Micro Modular Reactor.

Staff Seeks Public Comments on Decommissioning Trust Fund Draft Guidance On June 21, 2023, staff published a Federal Register Notice (FRN) (88 FR 40337) seeking public comment on draft Interim Staff Guidance (ISG): Use of the Decommissioning Trust Fund During Operations for Major Radioactive Component Disposal. The FRN will be open for a 60-day comment period, scheduled to close on August 21, 2023. The draft ISG describes the NRCs position on the use of decommissioning trust funds for major radioactive component disposal during operations and provides examples of information that would be useful to NRC staff when considering an exemption request (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System Accession No. ML23150A051).
