Items of Interest Week Ending February 16, 2018 Greater-Than-Class C and Transuranic Waste: Public Meeting; Request for Comment; Part 61 of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (Regulation Identifier Number 3150-AK00; NRC-2017-0081)

On February 14, 2018, the NRC published a document in the Federal Register (83 FR 6475) seeking stakeholder participation and involvement in identifying the various technical issues that should be considered in the development of a regulatory basis for the disposal of Greater-than-Class C and transuranic radioactive waste through means other than a deep geologic disposal, including near-surface disposal. The NRC is holding a public meeting on February 22, 2018, to assist in this process. Comments are due by April 16, 2018.

Items of Interest February 16, 2018 Fire Probabilistic Risk Assessment Frequently Asked Questions Public Meeting On February 13, 2018, the staff held a Category 2 public meeting with the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and industry stakeholders on Fire Probabilistic Risk Assessment (FPRA)

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs). Over the course of the meeting, discussions were held on the priorities and proposed schedule for FAQs; current status of existing FAQs; new FAQs; and the fire research plan. In addition, NEI presented its proposal regarding refinement of the credit allowed for Very Early Warning Detection Systems in NUREG-2180 that includes a fire database review, review of operating experience from a pilot plant, an expert elicitation, review of operating experience from other plants, and interim and final reports. NEI indicated that a final report could be completed by the 1st quarter of 2019. The staff provided comments on this approach, including the ambitious schedule proposed by NEI for this effort. A number of other action items were established at the end of the meeting that included the NRC issuing close-out memos for two FAQs, and NEI providing responses to staff comments on several FAQs. The next meeting will be held in approximately 2 to 3 months.
