Response to your email to the Commission "Consideration of SECY 18-005" on March 11, 2018 Date: Thursday, April 05, 2018 8:52:15 PM Mr. Luehman, Thank you for your feedback regarding SECY-18-0015, Staff Evaluation of the U.S.

Nuclear Regulatory Commission's Program Regulating Patient Release After Radioisotope Therapy. NRC licensees must provide verbal and written release instructions to patients in order to meet the requirements of 10 CFR part 35.75. The guidance the NRC provides establishes the framework for licensees to meet the regulations. As such, the NRC staff determined that further clarifications of the written instructions, will be included in an update to Regulatory Guide 8.39, Release of Patients Administered Radioactive Materials. The staff plans to include a discussion of best practices related to enhance licensees and patient understanding of the written instructions. The focus of the guidance is to increase awareness, provide enhanced calculations, patient understanding and the ability to follow the written instructions. The staff also intends to continue outreach to the medical community such as the Thyroid Cancer Survivors Association, Inc., to better inform our guidance.

We strive to fulfill our safety and security mission while maintaining a high level of technical quality in our communications with stakeholders; your input is valuable in facilitating our continuous improvement.

Douglas Bollock Chief, Medical Safety and Events Assessment Branch Division of Materials Safety, Security, State and Tribal Programs Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards
