NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs, Region II 245 Peachtree Center Ave., NE, Suite 2000, Atlanta GA 30303 Web Site: www.nrc.gov No. II-13-018 April 16, 2013 CONTACT: Roger Hannah (404) 997-4417 E-mail: OPA2@nrc.gov Joey Ledford (404) 997-4416 NRC SCHEDULES OPEN HOUSE TO DISCUSS ANNUAL ASSESSMENT OF BRUNSWICK NUCLEAR POWER PLANT Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials have scheduled an open house for April 24 to discuss the agencys assessment of safety performance during 2012 for the Brunswick nuclear power plant. The plant, operated by Duke Energy, is near Southport, N.C., about 30 miles south of Wilmington.

The open house, which the public is invited to attend, is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m.

at the Brunswick Media Center auditorium, 8520 River Road SE, in Southport.

The NRC resident inspectors and other NRC staff will be available to answer questions or provide additional information on the safety performance of the Brunswick plant, as well as the NRC role in ensuring safe plant operations.

Overall, the NRC staff concluded that the Brunswick plant, which has two boiling-water reactors, operated safely in 2012 and is receiving normal detailed oversight and inspection efforts this year.

During the first three quarters of 2012, both Brunswick units were subject to increased NRC oversight for an inspection finding related to the possibility of flooding in the emergency diesel generator fuel oil tank rooms. An NRC inspection found that the problem had been corrected and both units returned to normal oversight in the fourth quarter. All other inspection findings and performance indicators at the plant had very low safety significance.

The NRC inspects nuclear plants and monitors their performance on an ongoing basis, said NRC Region II Administrator Victor McCree. We issue inspection reports throughout the year and we hold these annual meetings near each plant to discuss our oversight and answer any questions local residents may have.

The annual assessment letter for the Brunswick plant is available on the NRC website.

Performance information for Brunswick Unit 1 and Unit 2 is updated quarterly and is available on the NRC website.
