No: 13-041 May 22, 2013 CONTACT: Scott Burnell, 301-415-8200 NRC Approves Increased Power Output for McGuire Nuclear Power Plant The Nuclear Regulatory Commission has approved a request by Duke Energy Carolinas to increase the generating capacity of McGuire Nuclear Station Units 1 and 2 by 1.7 percent each.

The NRC staffs careful evaluation determined that Duke could safely increase the reactors power output primarily through more accurate means of measuring feedwater flow. As part of its evaluation, NRC staff reviewed the companys analysis showing the plants design can accommodate the increased power level.

The NRCs safety evaluation of the plants proposed power increase focused on several areas, including the nuclear steam supply systems, instrumentation and control systems, electrical systems, accident evaluations, radiological consequences, fire protection, operations and training, testing, and technical specification changes.

Duke intends to implement Unit 2s increase during its spring 2014 refueling outage, and Unit 1s increase during its fall 2014 outage.

The NRC previously published a notice about the power increase application in the Federal Register. The agencys evaluation of the McGuire power increase is available on the NRC website.
