NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, D.C. 20555-0001 E-mail: opa.resource@nrc.gov Site: http://www.nrc.gov No.10-094 May 26, 2010 NRC SEEKING ADDITIONAL ENVIRONMENTAL SCOPING COMMENTS REGARDING LEE NEW REACTOR APPLICATION, MEETING JUNE 17 Nuclear Regulatory Commission staff will hold a public meeting Thursday, June 17, in Gaffney, S.C., to discuss the agencys review of a Combined License (COL) application for two new reactors proposed for the Lee site near Gaffney, and the environmental issues the agency should consider in reviewing additional information regarding the application.

Duke Energy submitted the application Dec. 13, 2007, seeking approval to build and operate two AP1000 reactors at the site, approximately 35 miles southwest of Charlotte, N.C. Duke updated the application with a Sept. 24, 2009, letter that outlined the companys plans to create an additional water source, called Make-Up Pond C, to support the proposed reactors. The NRC staff is seeking comments specifically regarding the environmental issues associated with creating Make-Up Pond C.

The NRC staff will meet with the public from 7 - 10 p.m. at the Restoration Church International, 1905 N. Limestone St. in Gaffney. The NRC will transcribe the meeting and post the information on the agencys Web page for the Lee application at: http://www.nrc.gov/reactors/new-reactors/col/lee.html.

NRC staff will be available for informal discussions with members of the public during an open house session from 6 - 7 p.m. No formal comments on the environmental review will be accepted during the open house.

Those wishing to register in advance to present their comments at the meeting should contact Sarah Lopas by telephone at 800-368-5642 x1147, or via e-mail at Lee.COLAEIS@nrc.gov by June

14. Those with special needs for attending or presenting information at the meeting should notify the staff by June 4. Those wishing to speak may also register at the meeting no later than 6:45 p.m.

Individual comments could be limited by the time available and the number of people wishing to speak.

NRC staff will also consider written comments on the scoping issues associated with Make-Up Pond C. Comments should be submitted no later than July 2, either by mail to the Chief, Rules, Directives and Editing Branch, Division of Administrative Services, Office of Administration, Mailstop TWB-05-B01M, U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Washington, DC 20555-0001, or via e- mail to Lee.COLAEIS@nrc.gov.
