NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, DC 20555-001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: http://www.nrc.gov/OPA No.01-133 November 30, 2001 NRC RELEASES DRAFT REVIEW PLAN FOR YUCCA MOUNTAIN The Nuclear Regulatory Commission is making public a draft version of a plan that it would use to review a possible future application to build a high-level nuclear waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, if the Department of Energy submits such an application. The principal purpose of the Yucca Mountain Review Plan would be to ensure the quality and uniformity of the NRC staffs licensing reviews.

The draft will be available electronically through the NRCs Electronic Reading Room at www.nrc.gov as an Agencywide Document Access and Management System (ADAMS) document and can also be viewed at the NRCs Public Document Room, One White Flint North, 11555 Rockville Pike, Rockville, Maryland. The draft plan for a possible Yucca Mountain repository, prepared by the NRC staff last year, is being made public for information only, while it undergoes a complete revision to bring it up to date and make it consistent with the NRCs final regulations, issued earlier this month. The NRC plans to publish the plan for public comment at a later date, after it completes the revisions.

The NRCs Office of the Inspector General is investigating an allegation that this version of the draft plan was improperly released to the Department of Energy.
