NRC NEWS U.S. NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION Office of Public Affairs Telephone: 301/415-8200 Washington, DC 20555-0001 E-mail: opa@nrc.gov Web Site: www.nrc.gov No.03-031 March 18, 2003 NRC ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON NUCLEAR WASTE TO MEET MARCH 25 - 27 IN ROCKVILLE, MARYLAND The Nuclear Regulatory Commissions Advisory Committee on Nuclear Waste (ACNW) will hold a meeting from March 25 to 27 in Rockville, Md., to discuss items related to the proposed repository for high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain, Nev.

The meeting, which is open to the public, will be held in Room T-2B3 of the agencys Two White Flint North Building, at 11545 Rockville Pike. It will begin at 10 a.m. on March 25, and at 8:30 a.m. on March 26 and 27.

Presentation and discussion on Realism in Simulating Long-Term Waste Package Corrosion and Source Term.

11:10 - 11:35 A.M.: Introduction to the Department of Energys Total System Performance Assessment (TSPA) Model Presentation by and discussion with a DOE representative regarding the TSPA.

11:35 A.M. - Noon: Introduction to NRCs Total-System Performance Assessment (TPA)

Presentations by and discussions with representatives of the NRCs Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards (NMSS)/Division of Waste Management (DWM) regarding the TPA.

NOON - 1:00 P.M. ***LUNCH***

1:00 - 2:45 P.M.: Overview of TSPA and TPA: Assumptions and Differences in Approach Overview presentations by and discussions with representatives of the DWM and DOE on the TSPA and TPA, focusing on:

Infiltration/tunnel dripping; Source Term; Near Field; Unsaturated Zone; Saturated Zone; and Biosphere and dose.
