LIGHT PLANE CRASH IN NEW MEXICO t

The New Mexico Bureau of Hazardous and Radioactive Material notified Region IV of a light plane crash that occurred on March 15, 1993, that killed all four occupants. A sealed source (cobalt-60, 46 millicurie) package was carried on the flight. The source was packaged in a Type A container (steel drum with a lead shield). The source has not been recovered and is believed to be located under 8 feet of snow at the remote crash site.

New Mexico Department of Public Safety personnel and DOE representatives have been onsite. The U.S. Forest Service is ordering early recovery of t

the source at the crash scene, which is on Department of Agriculture land. The New Mexico radiation control program and NRC Region IV have offered advice to the Forest Service representative. Region IV is

continuing to monitor the recovery activities.

There is some media interest in the accident.

The state of Texas has been informed.

Region IV received notification of this occurrence initially on March 15, 1993, and and again on March 18, 1993. Region IV has informed NMSS and SP. Also, the RSO for the Department of Agriculture has been contacted.
