SHIPMENT OF RADI0 ACTIVE MATERIAL IN EXCESS OF DEPARTMEt!T OF l TRANSPORTATION (DOT) RADIATION LIMITS (UPDATE)

The licensee previously reported that Sheppard Air Force Base, Wichita Falls, Texas, had received a package of radioactive material from Mallinckrodt Medical, Inc., Dallas, Texas, in excess of DOT radiation limits. The package contained 2 capsules totaling 5 millicuries (mci) of iodine-131 (1-131) for use in diagnostic medical procedures and initially was reported to read 500 mR/hr at the package's surface.

The licensee reported to NRC Region IV at 4:45 p.m. CST on February 10, 1993, that a mistake had been made during the receipt survey in that the survey meter was incorrectly read in terms of the scale multiplier.

The correct measurement should have been 50 mR/hr. a reading that is -

eithin regulatory limits.

The state of Texas will be notified.
