South Texas Project, Unit 2 DN 50-498; 50-499 SUBJ':CT: REDUCTION OF WORK FORCE l

HL&P announced to the RRI that Brown and Root (B&R), the constructor, planned to reduce their work f orce by at least 10% beginning at noon on May 1,1980.

The licensee stated that the layof f could involve at least 500 employees and possibly as hi b as 600.

B The self-imposed stop-work orders in the areas of concrete placement and welding were stated as the sole reason for the layoffs.

No press release was made or planned by the licensee or NRC.

Site construction progress is currently reported at 35%.

There is no SNM on site.

Ihis Preliminary Notification is issued for information only and no further action by IE is anticipated. Region IV, Arlington, Texas, received notifica-tion of this occurrence by telephone from the South Texss Site QA Supervisor at 1:30 p.m. on May 1, 1980.
