June 8, 2011 PRELIMINARY NOTIFICATION OF EVENT OR UNUSUAL OCCURRENCE -- PNO-IV-004-A This preliminary notification constitutes EARLY notice of events of POSSIBLE safety or public interest significance. The information is as initially received without verification or evaluation, and is basically all that is known by the Region IV, Arlington, Texas, staff on this date.
Facility Licensee Emergency Classification Notification of Unusual Event Fort Calhoun Station X Alert Site Area Emergency Docket: 50-285 General Emergency License No.: DPR-40 Not Applicable SUBBJECT: (UPDATE) - Fort Calhoun Station Declaration of an ALERT Due to Fire Affecting Plant Safety Systems DESCRIPTION: This Preliminary Notification (PN) updates information discussed in PNO-IV-004. This PN was issued on June 7, 2011 as a result of an Alert that was declared at Fort Calhoun Station at 9:40 a.m. (CDT) on June 7, in response to a fire affecting some plant electrical equipment. At 1:15 p.m. (CDT) on June 7, the licensee exited the Alert on the basis of the availability of required plant equipment, the accessibility of plant safety systems following ventilation of the affected switchgear room, and restoration of spent fuel pool cooling. Although the plant briefly lost its normal ability to cool the spent fuel pool, temperatures in the pool remained at safe levels and the plant recovered pool cooling without the need for any of the plants multiple backup systems. The plant remained safely shutdown throughout the event. An Unusual Event declaration remains in effect because of the high level of the Missouri River (refer to PNO-IV-003 dated June 6, 2011).
The resident inspectors monitored the licensees actions in response to the fire. Following the licensees exit from the Alert, the NRC returned to the normal response mode. The NRC staff will continue to follow-up on the licensees investigation into the circumstances surrounding this event and will continue to provide 24-hour coverage at the site to monitor the licensees preparation for and response to any impacts caused by elevated levels along the Missouri River.
