National Respons,.s Center (Department of Transportation) that a high radiation. level had been measured on a rail car arriving at the LaCledes steel Rail Yard at Federal, Illinois.
The car, which contained scrap pipe from an oil field, was rejected and placed in a Southern Pacific rail yard at Hood River, Illinois.
The railroad reported a radiation measugament.of 26.14 rads per hour.
The railroad also notified State of Illinois agencies, and an i
inspector from the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety was Jispatched to the rail yard.
The inspector performed r thorough 1
radiation survey of the suspect rail car and several nearby cars, but was unable to detect any radiation levels abcVe natural background.
The Department of Nuclear Safety is continuing its investigation of the incident and will check the accuracy of the instrumentation which originally recorded the high reading.
The NRC Operations Center was notified of the initial high radiation measurement at 7:26 p.m. (EST) on December 14, 1992, by the National Response Center.
