STOLEN MOISTURE-DENSITY GAUGE At 7 a.m. (CST), November 3,1986, an employee discovered a moisture-density gauge (Campbell-Pacific Model MC/2) had been stolen from a construction trailer at the United Airlines Terminal I construction staging area, O' Hare International Airport, Chicago.
Th2 licensee said the trailer door had been forced open and the gauge, containing two sealed sources--- 10 mil 11 curies of cesium-137 and 50 mil 11 curies of americium-241--- was missing along with the gauge's bright orange and plastic storage case.
The gauge and storage case were last seen by an employee at about 3:30 p.m., October 31, 1986. The employee could not recall if the handle was locked to prevent exposure of the source rod.
The licensee reported the theft to United Airlines Security, the Chicago Police Department, and the Illinois Department of Nuclear Safety. Pictures of the gauge also were being posted at the construction site with a warning about the hazards of radiation. The licensee hopes the notice will encourage the gauge's return.
Region III (Chicago) is monitoring the licensee's course of action.
