FAILURE OF AUXILIARY FEEDWATER PUMPS TO START AUTOMATICALLY Zion, Unit 2 tripped from 90% power at 1:42 p.m. (CST) on 12/11/81 due to a generator trip (electrical problem-exact cause not known at this time).
Of the three auxiliary feedwater pumps; pump 2A was out of service and neither of the other two started automatically. 2B pump started manually on the first try; 2C pump required second try to start. A similar event occurred on December 6,1981, and' the cause of the auxiliary feedwater pumps failure to start automatically as required could not be established. The pumps that failed to start automatically following today's reactor trip had been tested earlier in the day and responded normally.
The licensee has agreed to keep the Unit 2 in shutdown until cause of pump start failures can be identified. A Confirmation of Action letter is being issued.
